Frère Jérôme Paradis

Born in Charlesbourg, Quebec, 1902 – 1994

Frère Jérôme devoted his life (from the age of twelve) to the Brothers of St. Croix. He was a teacher at Notre Dame, Montreal (1928-35). He begain painting with an ever growing knowledge and interest in art.


He studied plastic arts at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Montreal (1935-39). Later, he spent 6 years in a retreat in the Laurentians before returning to Notre Dame in 1958. In 1959, he started a workshop with a dozen serious art students and after 1964 he took on only a few students. Some of his students became prominent painters; such as, Jean-Paul Mousseau and Claude Vermette. His own painting was influenced by his personal friend, Paul Emile Borduas.


His non-figurative works were created using a trowel and knife to apply his media; these works have been described as imposing and powerful. He exhibited in group and solo exhibitions from 1939 to 1989. His paintings are in many private collections.
