Born in Brighton, England, Gordon Applebe Smith (1919-) fell in love with British Columbia – and with his future wife, Marion Fleming – during a vacation just before World War II. After serving in the war, he returned to Vancouver to recuperate from a serious wound. He married and endeavoured to find a place in the nascent west-coast art scene, which he remains an active member of today.
